I just had a thought, and I wonder if this is possible.
Has anyone ever tried using a powered mini-PCie to PCIe riser like one of these to add a lightweight GPU to an APU board?
I'm thinking something like a GeForce 720GT which maxes out at 17W (though I'd never load it up that high).
Power would likely be a concern, as I'm not sure if the mini-Pcie slots which are really designed for WLAN cards can provide that much power, but since the riser is powered, that could be provided from another source, or maybe from the SATA power header. If a sufficient AC adapter were to be used, could the SATA power header handle that kind of load?
Assuming sufficient power could be provided, would the GPU be properly detected and utilized by an OS? I'd imagine BIOS output would still only go to the serial console but tha'ts not a big concern.
I'm thinking a APU board with a custom modified case and a 720GT could make a great little low power HTPC box.
I wonder what other peoples thoughts are.
